I can’t believe how fast the past two weeks have gone by! To sum up what is going on, Nemacolin was a great great tournament! My favorite by far. From there we went to the Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs, MI. Boyne was a beautiful place but the tournament was very hectic. It was a 144-player field so there is a lot of work to do. We had extra help again but we had one less day to get set up than we did at Nemacolin. Also, Boyne had a terrible internet connection (also the reason why I didn’t blog last week) and a lot of what we do post-round relies on the internet so that meant some late nights also. The highlight of the week was my day off because my grandparents came up from Grand Rapids. We went up into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Not only was it beautiful but it was great to hang out with my grandparents too. The tournament was fun but it just went by really fast. I would have loved to stay there a little while longer but that is just the way this job is. Some weeks it seems like we are set up and then we are gone onto the next location in the blink of an eye.
Which brings me to where I am now, this week’s tournament is in Dublin, Ohio outside of Columbus. We are at the Country Club at Muirfield Village. The Muirfield Golf Club is where they play the PGA Memorial Tournament and the golf courses were designed by Jack Nicklaus so it is a pretty well known place. When we arrived at the course last Friday, Ben Rothelisberger was there playing golf and we were able to meet him and get his autograph. Despite his personal issues, it was pretty cool to meet a guy who has won two Super Bowls. On a side note, check it this link for a little incident that happened the same day we met him. In other news, the theme of this week has seemed to be the Ops/Comms Divide. They told us before we hit the road that this division sometimes happens between the Ops and Comms staff. To the ops, it seems like we just sit inside in the air conditioning and work on computers all day. For us, it is hard because sometimes it gorgeous outside and we are stuck in a room as well as ops always gets to go home earlier in the night. If Ops took on our hardest post-round they would realize how tough the job is sometimes and if we took on Ops’ hardest set-up day we would probably want to cry. The reality is that without either staff the tournament could not be run as organized it is. The staffs are equally important in my mind. Still, it is hard to see life though the other side’s eyes and we almost never get a full view of what we all go through each day. Jonah, our tournament director this week, has been helping that situation a lot. Jonah was a Comms intern which means he knows what the division feels like. Most TDs were Ops interns so they don’t always fully understand what our job entails. That being said, Jonah has definitely been mixing things up. For example, yesterday I spent the first three hours of the morning setting tees and Jen (one of the ops) was making copies in the afternoon. I really think it is helping so much for the different staffs to see the other side.
Besides that, the week has been going very well. Greg, Kate and I have really hit our stride over the past couple weeks when it comes to being fast and efficient with Comms duties. We had a four hour rain delay yesterday which was no fun but we got through it. One thing that has been most fun this week is seeing the juniors. At this point, a lot of them have been in at least one of our tournaments so far this summer and it has been great to form friendships with them and have fun with them out on the course.
Tomorrow is the final round and then we head to Chicago for the Midwest Junior Players Championship. As most of you know, I love Chicago so I am very excited for the coming week! Hopefully I will be able to keep you updated on what I am doing there!
